Reviews of the Most Popular Garage Door Openers

By: Thomas MacIntosh

Following is a review of few of the best garage door openers available today in the market:

Liftmaster 976LM

Because of it being a belt driven unit this garage door opener is very quiet during its operation. It also comes with other features like a 20-hour battery back-up which allows you to open and close the garage door even during a power failure. You can upgrade your garage door opener for a keyless entry system where you wouldn’t require either a key or a remote control to enter the garage. However, the best thing about this garage door is still its noiseless operation.

Genie Excelerator ISD990-2

Estimated at a price of something around $200 Genie Excelerator ISD990-2 is a garage door opener that opens at the rate of fourteen inches per second and closes at half the speed. What this means is that the owner can get into the house quickly and so it provides him with a security advantage. The other feature of this garage door is that it starts and stops gently. This would keep the wear and tear of the garage door to a minimum. The Excelerator also comes with a safety sensor which when detects an obstruction automatically reverses the door. There is also a vacation lock for the garage door. It is based on screw drive technology and overall it is good value for money.

Craftsman 53985

If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive garage door opener then the Craftsman 53985 is the one that would fit your bill. Estimated at a price of about $170 it comes with the basic features you require. However it is a bit noisy although it is based on the chain-drive mechanism. However the unit comes with two remotes with rolling-code security. There are also infrared sensors for security. It also comes with a touchpad console for you to get into the garage without a key.

Wayne-Dalton iDrive
(*est. $300)

Estimated at a price of around $300 the Wayne-Dalton iDrive is one of the more expensive garage door openers. This model uses a different technology than most of the other garage door openers which are belt, screw and chain-drive models. This model uses the torsion system. This technology does not require you to have a large motor box that is mounted on the ceiling. And there is also no requirement of the overhead track. So if you have a low ceiling garage the iDrive will allow you to have 6 more inches which other garage door openers wouldn’t allow. To enhance the security this model uses a military-grade encryption system for the rolling security code.
