Chubb Fire And Modern Capitalism: World Leadership Has Its Price

By: Ben Needles

Although there are plenty of newer, cheaper options for fire safety products out there, Chubb Fire (or, as its properly known, Chubb Safety) is still one of the oldest fire safety corporations in the UK marketplace, and one with a colorful history.

Chubb began with the dreams of the Chubb brothers, Charles and Jeremiah, who in 1818 designed and patented their detector lock, still a popular model worldwide--especially following a mishap with the Prince Regent and a misplaced chair with a detector lock and key on it. Chubb continued to innovate throughout the nineteenth century, introducing time locks and burglar-proof safes to widespread success among the public.

A major shift in Chubb corporate strategy came about in the mid-20th century, however, with Chubbs entry into the world of fire protection products. With this shift in focus came the establishment of an increasingly more elaborate corporate structure, as the core assets of the Chubb corporation were bought, sold, bought and sold again by a variety of electronics and holdings firms worldwide.

Today, the Chubb corporation is clearly the leader in world fire protection services--at least in terms of size. Whats not so clear is whether Chubb can still offer its customers the hands-on relationship thats the most valuable commodity in the modern consumer environment--the most valuable, and the most scarce.

Chubb has come a long way from the days when the Chubb brothers designed locks in their workshop, and the labyrinthine structure of the Chubb corporation can make it difficult for the end consumer to get the fire protection products--fire blankets, stainless steel extinguishers, extinguisher brackets, and all the goods and truly fire-safe home needs--at a reasonable price and with a reasonable degree of personal interaction. The world has become more complex, much like the Chubb corporation--but at what price for the consumer? Who do you trust more, the small fire protection merchant who offers you personal experience and advice, or the low-ranking employees of a multinational holding concern? The story of Chubb is the story of modern capitalism: always reaching farther, yet always moving farther from human experience.

Thats the history of Chubb Safety (or Chubb Fire, as again, its commonly called): a long history of product development, and, sad to say, a long history of overhead that gets passed on to the consumer. There are other options for top-of-the-line fire protection, and a good working knowledge of what your options are will keep you from paying top dollar for some corporations CO2 extinguishers and fire blankets--no matter how long and storied the corporations history. A long history, after all, doesnt necessarily mean a better consumer experience.
