The world of California health insurance can be a confusing place, but health insurance is certainly something you should understand and consider. Many Americans do not have health insurance, a situation which some campaigners are trying to change. Sometimes an individual may be uninsured because their health insurance used to be provided by their employer and they have either changed jobs or lost their job, or because they were insured on their partner or spouse’s health insurance, and they have lost that because of divorce or bereavement. But with health care costs rising, health insurance is becoming essential in America. If you do not have health insurance, you should consider the options available to you in California.

If you or someone in your family becomes ill and requires a medical consultation or medical treatment, this can be a costly process, especially for more serious illnesses. In the USA, the state does not provide free health care for individuals, and people must either pay for health care themselves or take out an insurance policy with a private insurer which will pay for any health care they require. If you or your family requires health care, and you have private health insurance, you can make a claim to cover the costs. Having health insurance means you do not have to worry about what would happen to you and your family if you or they were to become ill. Although there are federal laws regulating insurance provision, each state has its own individual regulations, and California is no exception.

So what are your options when it comes to California health insurance? Firstly, you should check whether your employer offers health insurance. Many employers have group health insurance policies which cover their employees. Insurance companies calculate the premiums on such policies using averages for the group – such as age or location. So your personal details and health condition will not directly affect your cover under your employer’s health plan. It is actually a legal requirement in California that insurers offer health coverage to groups, whereas they are not obliged to offer insurance to individuals. However, it is not a legal requirement that employers offer health insurance.

If you are not insured through a work health plan, you should consider taking out individual California health insurance for yourself and your family. This will mean you are covered for your medical costs in case of illness or accident. Insurers are not required to offer health insurance to individuals, and you will have to give information on you health status, telling an insurer about any health problems or pre-existing conditions. It is possible that you will be turned down for private health insurance, due to factors such as your state of health. If this happens, you may be eligible to receive help from the state or organization who insure low-income people or people with pre-existing conditions. If you are able to get individual private health insurance, you should examine carefully the level of cover you are paying for. California health insurance providers are likely to tailor a policy to you individual circumstances, so you should check the small print and make sure you understand what you are buying and what you are covered for.
