An Employees Best Friend - The Law

Ive heard it said that if you love your job, it isnt work. Well, Im not sure if that is completely accurate, but doesnt it have a ring of truth?

We spend a huge part of our lives working, and it certainly seems like too many of us are not all that happy with our jobs. Face it: when you work for someone else, you have to do what they say. When you work with other employees who you dont control, you have no alternative except to get along. Bite the bullet. Suck it in. Do what youre told.

Or do you?

I once found myself in a job that I came to hate. I hated starting every day, and I couldnt wait for the day to end. I couldnt stand my boss, and there were other employees who always seemed to be favored. And because these other employees had the ear of the boss, they also had a feeling of being higher in the pecking order than me.

It wasnt fair. It wasnt enjoyable. It wasnt right. And, as I came to understand, it wasnt LEGAL!

Thats right. If you are a good employee, the law is on your side. Even in employment-at-will states, you still have lots of law on your side. Most employees have no idea regarding all the rights that the laws give to them. So, why doesnt your boss tell you these things? Because its in Your best interest to know them, but not in his/her best interest to inform you!

You Can End Your Frustration

You can end your frustration by understanding your rights. You can bring back enjoyment to your work. You can take control. If youre going to spend your valuable life working for a company or boss that doesnt treat you right, then arent you wasting part of your life?

You have rights. Thats correct. You have lots of rights on your side, but your boss isnt going to tell you these rights, especially if he/she is infringing on those rights. There may be sexual harrassment or refusal for medical leave.

Take Back Control

Even though you are not the boss, you really can take control. You can become powerful. You can make yourself almost termination proof. Dont accept a hostile work environment or a bad boss.

Dont Be Afraid

Hey, this is your life. Do you want to be happy, content, fulfilled, satisfied? I know I wasnt happy. I wasnt content. I wasnt fulfilled. And I definately wasnt satisfied. I was miserable. Can you relate? You might be fearful of being fired. You may be afraid of being retaliated against. And perhaps you are afraid you might be treated badly, or even ignored, or passed over for promotions.

Become Educated. Seek Professional Help.

There comes a point where every employee who feels abused has to make up his/her mind to not take it anymore. And when you get to this point, you have to get educated. You have to learn how to turn the tables. You have to take control.
